Does your car have a Start-Stop system and the battery is starting to fail? At Málaga Baterías we are an Official Varta Distributor and stock the AGM and EFB batteries these vehicles require, with the exact reference for your model. We run a free load test with Midtronics equipment and, if it needs replacing, we fit it in the shop in about 15 minutes and without an appointment. Find us at C/ La Orotava, 100 (Málaga).

What a Start-Stop battery is

The Start-Stop system switches the engine off at every stop (traffic light, jam) and restarts it when you release the brake or clutch. That multiplies the number of starts and forces the battery to power the electrics with the engine off. A conventional starter battery is not built for this and degrades very quickly. See also our car batteries if your vehicle has no Start-Stop.

AGM and EFB: which one your car takes

Start-Stop cars run one of these two technologies, and they are not casually interchangeable:

  • EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): a reinforced flooded battery, for basic Start-Stop (without brake energy recovery).
  • AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat): electrolyte absorbed in glass fibre, higher resistance to cycling and deep discharge; required by Start-Stop cars with regenerative braking.

Rule of thumb: if your car came with AGM from the factory, replace it with AGM. On a car originally fitted with EFB you may fit AGM or EFB, but never the other way round. In the shop we confirm the correct technology from your plate.

Why a conventional battery will not do

Fitting a normal starter battery in a Start-Stop car is a common mistake: it lasts only weeks or months, the Start-Stop stops working and dashboard warnings may appear. AGM and EFB are designed for many more cycles and to work at partial states of charge, which is exactly what this kind of car does.

OBD-II coding when replacing the battery

Many Start-Stop vehicles have a battery management system (BMS) that needs to know a new battery has been fitted. So after the change it is advisable to register or code the battery through the OBD-II port so the car charges it correctly and Start-Stop stays active. At Málaga Baterías we tell you whether your model needs that registration.

Price and service in Málaga

An AGM or EFB battery costs more than a conventional one because of its construction, and the price depends on capacity (Ah), starting current (EN) and brand. We give you a fixed quote before fitting, no surprises. Come to C/ La Orotava, 100, or send us your plate on WhatsApp and we tell you the reference and price in minutes. For other applications, see our starter batteries.

Frequently asked questions about Start-Stop batteries

Can I fit a normal battery in a Start-Stop car?

Not advisable. A conventional starter battery cannot handle the cycling and partial discharges of Start-Stop: it lasts very little, the system stops working and warnings may appear. You should fit the AGM or EFB your car requires.

What is the difference between AGM and EFB?

EFB is a reinforced flooded battery for basic Start-Stop; AGM has the electrolyte absorbed in glass fibre, withstands more cycles and deeper discharge and is required by cars with regenerative braking. If your car came with AGM, replace it with AGM.

Does the new battery need OBD coding?

On many cars with energy management, yes: the battery should be registered through the OBD-II port so the system charges it properly and Start-Stop stays active. We tell you if your model needs it.

How long does the change take and do I need an appointment?

The in-shop change usually takes about 15 minutes and no appointment is needed. First we run a free load test with Midtronics to confirm the battery is the problem.
