Starting vs service: not the same
In marine use two functions are distinguished that often need different batteries:
- Starting battery: delivers a strong burst of current to crank the engine. It prioritises peak power.
- Service battery (deep-cycle): powers the fridge, lights, sounder, GPS, bilge pump or electric motor for hours. It is designed to be discharged and recharged many times without degrading.
Using a starting battery as a service battery drains it within a few seasons. On a boat it is usual to separate both circuits with two batteries suited to each use.
AGM, GEL or lithium: which technology to choose
All three work well at sea, with differences:
- AGM: maintenance-free, good resistance to vibration and cycling, works for both starting and moderate service. Great value for money.
- GEL: very tolerant of deep discharge and demanding cycling; ideal for intensive service.

Humidity and salt: the right battery on the coast
On the Málaga coast humidity and salt punish terminals and connections. AGM and GEL batteries are sealed and do not spill electrolyte, which makes them safer on board and with the roll of the sea. Even so, keep terminals clean and protected, and secure the battery well in its tray to avoid vibration.
