What is a deep-cycle battery
A starter battery delivers a huge current for a few seconds to crank the engine and is immediately recharged by the alternator. A deep-cycle battery does the opposite: it releases a moderate current over a long time and is designed to be drained and refilled hundreds or thousands of times. Its plates are thicker and its chemistry tolerates deep discharge (DoD), whereas a starter battery would fail within weeks under that use. That is why you must never fit a starter battery in a motorhome or a solar system.
